Why Design and Material Matter So Much in Kitchen Utensils

0618

Last week, I sent two nylon utensil samples to a potential client. The client had asked for tools that meet LFGB food safety standards — something our factory specializes in. But after testing the samples, he gave me honest feedback: “They’re too soft, not what I’m looking for.”

A few days later, he sent me two utensils he bought from IKEA. As soon as I held them in my hands, I understood what he meant. These tools were really firm and tough — quite different from the ones we sent.

This Monday, I brought them to our engineer and asked, “Why is there such a big difference?”
He examined the samples and quickly gave me the answer: “They use nylon with 30% fiberglass. That’s why it feels so strong.”

It was a simple but powerful reminder: design and material choices make a big difference in the final product.

Material Affects Performance

Nylon by itself is flexible and lightweight. But when you mix it with fiberglass (usually 30% for kitchenware), it becomes tougher, more heat-resistant, and holds its shape better — especially important for turners and spatulas used with hot pans.

If the tool is too soft, it won’t work well for flipping food. But if it’s too hard, it might scratch non-stick surfaces. That’s why finding the right material mix is so important.

Design Decides Function

Besides material, the shape and thickness of the product also matter. A thin, wide head might feel softer than a smaller, thicker head — even if the material is the same. That’s why copying a product’s look isn’t enough. You need to understand how it works.

Our Solution

After studying the IKEA tools and checking the fiberglass content, our engineer confirmed: we can make utensils with the same toughness. It’s all about using the right nylon blend and adjusting the design details.

As a factory, we don’t just make products — we help solve problems. If you have a sample you like but want to improve, or if you have a new idea, we can help turn it into a real, functional tool.

Design and material may seem small, but they decide whether a kitchen tool feels just okay or just right.
